The inspiration for my philosophy of education is right in this photo, with those three little smiling faces (coupled with the wisdom bestowed upon me by being raised by two educators!). My children, though cut from the same cloth, are all very different individuals. They each have their own set of strengths, needs, and personalities, and they vary from each other as much as night does from day. When forming my teaching practices, I realized that if my own children are that diverse then each of my students will be as well. So, in a classroom of 30+ students, that is a great deal of diversity!
The diversity amongst students drives my teaching practice and challenges me to be the best teacher I can be at all times. I must be fully engaged in each student's learning, which involves ensuring that my lessons are aimed to maximize the learning of each student. So, whether adjusting lessons to challenge the students with better understandings, or to better support the students with greater needs, the goal is the same; each student has a right to learn.
I love education. I love educating, and being educated. I have a firm belief that the learning process is reciprocal between teacher and student, requiring a great degree of respect between all parties to maximize efficacy. This respect is built on relationships, which I believe is the heart of a classroom. The relationships built between student and teacher, and between student and student, are what dictate the learning environment. With strong relationships, students and teachers alike have a sense of security, which provides opportunity for risk taking. Risk taking provides maximum growth for all parties involved.
